Sol Ecolution playing a key role towards transitioning to low carbon and renewable energy solutions

October 14, 2021 – The Sol Group (Sol), the leading provider of energy solutions in the Caribbean, is excited to announce a major step towards further energizing the region with the launch of a low carbon and renewable energy division: “Sol Ecolution”. Sol Ecolution was launched at the recent CARILEC (Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation) conference, with the purpose of delivering on Sol’s commitment to energize the communities we serve by facilitating the development of diverse renewable and low carbon energy solutions.

With a long history and deep understanding of the Caribbean energy eco-system, Sol Ecolution is uniquely positioned to support our customers, stakeholders, and communities through this transition. Our capabilities include financing, logistics, technical expertise, and Engineering, Procurement and Construction services. Sol Ecolution is excited to leverage these capabilities to support the transition towards lower carbon and renewable energy solutions across the region.

Sol Ecolution has started deploying solar photovoltaic (PV) technology in a retail service station in Barbados and is currently assessing an additional 29 pilots in retail stations spanning Barbados, St. Maarten, Grenada, Martinique, Guadeloupe, the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, and Puerto Rico. Over the next few years, it will expand further to include our company-owned retail and terminals networks.  Our offices in St. Maarten and our Bermuda terminal will also be producing PV energy in the short term and we expect to install at least 5 more megawatts (MW) of PV energy generation on commercial scale systems across our offices and unused land from our terminals. Beyond deploying solar technology on assets.

“We are excited by the opportunity to play a key role in enabling sustainable energy solutions in the communities in which we live, work and play, now and for generations”, said Christophe Zyde, Vice President Corporate Development and Sol Ecolution. “Sol is actively engaged in discussions with its utility and commercial customers to identify opportunities to facilitate the development of renewable energy for third party use across the region”, added Zyde.

Dami Adesegha, Group Manager of Sol Ecolution stated, “While we are in the early stages of this promising journey, we see this as a long-term initiative that will play out over decades, and we have committed a significant amount of capital over the next several years to support this initiative”.

The Sol Group of companies operates in 22 countries across the Eastern Caribbean, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Bermuda, Bahamas, Cayman, Belize, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Martinique and Guadeloupe. Sol supplies fuels, lubricants, bitumen and LPG through an extensive service station network, with marine, aviation and commercial operations in the Caribbean.

Dami Adesegha, Group Manager, Sol Ecolution stated, “While we are in the early stages of this promising journey, we see this as a long-term initiative that will play out over decades, and we have committed a significant amount of capital over the next several years to support this initiative”.

Given the region’s untapped low carbon and renewable energy potential, as well as the initiatives of the Caribbean governments and utilities to significantly boost low carbon and renewable energy penetration, it is clear that the energy mix within the Caribbean will shift significantly over the next 10 to 20 years.

Powering Journeys

Supporting Flavors of Grenada Culinary Training Camp

We at Sol have a passion for powering journeys, and so we recently joined forces with Flavors of Grenada to host a five (5) week culinary training camp for teenagers! To top off the experience, our campers coordinated a farm to table dinner in the grand dining room at the Tower Estate in St. Paul’s. Through this exciting culinary initiative, we were able to encourage young upcoming chefs and service personnel, build awareness of Grenada’s growing Hospitality Industry and educate Grenadians more about accessing, growing and preparing their own seasonal healthy foods and drinks. We are proud to have supported this initiative through a monetary contribution and the provision of Sol Gas for food preparation. A job well done to our campers; we cannot wait to see where this journey takes you!

Sol takes steps to further energize St. Maarten community

Sol, the Caribbean’s leading provider of petroleum-based energy solutions has taken a major step towards further energizing the island of St. Maarten. This comes with the recent acquisition of Gulfstream Petroleum Dominicana SRL’s (GPD’s) integrated fuel marketing business in St. Maarten, the Texaco-Branded Network, which involves retail, commercial, marine, LPG distribution operations and the aviation assets and customer contracts.

Commenting on what this acquisition means for consumers, Robert James, General Manager of Sol St. Maarten said that it unlocks opportunities for synergies, and efficiencies across the business, allowing Sol’s teams to focus on delivering safe, reliable products and services to a wider base of customers in St. Maarten. He noted that with the integration of GPD’s network, Sol will now supply a wider network of retail service stations, which will, in turn, provide Sol with the opportunity to offer innovative programs and promotions to its new customer base. James said, “We are passionate about energizing our communities, and about continuing to power the personal and professional journeys of the people of St. Maarten.”

Sol is looking forward to growing together with its new and existing partners to provide exciting and exceptional service opportunities to consumers. Sol is emphasizing that all GPD’s existing contracts with its customers will be honored and that the team is looking forward to strengthening its relationship with partners.

Sol has also signaled that the company views the island’s otherwise untapped low carbon and renewable energy industry with optimism for the future and is exploring initiatives designed to lower the carbon footprint in St. Maarten through renewable energy and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The company is seeking to integrate renewable energy solutions into its operations and, through its stakeholders and partners, is looking forward to being able to power its operations and provide its customers and partners with renewable energy and low carbon power generation options.

During the past five years, Sol has invested over US$22M into the St. Maarten economy and projects an additional capital investment of approximately US$34M. The company has stated that it will continue to manage every aspect of the business driven and guided through its business core values of Integrity, Respect, Safety and Community.

Sol Gives Back through the donation of fuel to the BDF

Sol (Barbados) Ltd. (Sol) stands by its commitment to the community in which we operate, especially during these unprecedented times. As such, Sol has partnered with the Barbados Defence Force by donating 11,000 litres of fuel (with a retail value of over BBD $28,000.00) in our continued efforts to fulfil our mandate to be a true friend of the community and to be a good corporate citizen in the environments where we all live, work and play, and this is especially true amidst COVID-19.

The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) has been facilitating the distribution of care packages to vulnerable households as part of the Government’s COVID-19 Relief Programme. Sol has provided fuel to assist in this endeavour.

In response to the donation, Chief of Staff, Colonel Glyne Grannum had this to say,

For many years, Sol Petroleum (Barbados) SRL has been one of the Barbados Defence Force’s (BDF) foremost strategic partners. Loyal to their mission, values and promise in the fuel industry, the Sol Group has continuously contributed to the BDF’s mobility on land and at sea. During our fight against the unseen enemy, COVID-19, Sol understood and demonstrated their ability to be a team player and in the true sense of nationhood, made a considerable donation to augment the BDFs capabilities.  As I continue to lead the Force, I am truly comforted to know that in the face of many unknowns, the BDF has the necessary partners and corporate support to be effective”.

Mr. Roger Barrow, General Manager of Sol Barbados reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the region, “We take our corporate responsibility seriously and are mindful of the vital role that our products and services play in ’Powering Journeys and Energizing Communities’ in which we operate. This is just our way of showing that we care and we will continue to support those organizations helping others when we can.”

Sol, the leading supplier of petroleum-based products and energy solutions in the region has championed various initiatives to provide contributions of over BBD$700,000 regionally towards supporting essential workers and charitable food bank organizations responding to these challenging times. We remain committed to further supporting our community, guided by our social investment pillars, education, sports, environment, and charities.
